depuis 1991 au Cambodge, le Dr Beat Richner a accompli
en peu de temps ce qu'aucune œuvre d'entraide
n'avait réussi jusqu'alors : l'ouverture de
trois hôpitaux qui pratiquent avec succès
une médecine de base moderne, en collaboration
avec 1200 médecins et infirmiers cambodgiens.
Ce livre nous plonge au cœur même de la vie
d'un homme qui, en rétablissant le
système hospitalier, a permis à une
population pauvre d'accéder facilement aux
soins, sauvant ainsi des milliers d'enfants. C'est un

Buch beginnt da, wo das alte aufgehört hat, mit
einem Zitat von Bundespräsident Jean-Pascal
Delamuraz, der 1996 mit König Sihanouk das zweite
Spital in Phnom Penh eingeweiht hat: «Wer da
sagt, ein Computertomograph sei für dieses Land
zu sophisticated, ist ein
Neokolonialist.»

sind ein drittes Spital mit angeschlossener
Maternité und ein Ausbildungs- und
Konferenzzentrum in Siem Reap Angkor entstanden. Die
Meinung, eine moderne Medizin sei in der Dritten Welt
unnötig, wird auch heute noch vertreten, und es
wird in grossen Teilen der internationalen
Gemeinschaft danach gehandelt. Diese Haltung aber
bewirkt das Fortbestehen der Misere. Denn nur dank
moderner Geräte und Medikamente konnten in Kantha
Bopha II derart wichtige Fortschritte und Entdeckungen
gemacht werden, z.B. die Tuberkulose beim
Säugling, die in dieser Form nicht bekannt war,
und eine Entdeckung von weltweiter Bedeutung ist. Die
Kantha-Bopha-Spitäler sind deshalb Träger
einer Vision, wie Medizin effizient, gerecht und ohne
Korruption (und damit schliesslich billiger) in den
armen Ländern getätigt werden
kann.
